April Jorgensen

April JorgensenDirector

April commenced her career in beauty therapy in 1995 gaining an ITEC Aestheticiennes and Physiatrics Diploma. After working in the beauty industry for 5 years, April decided to seek a paramedical pathway working with a Facial Plastic Surgeon, Dr Jayson Oates.

April has been a Dermal Therapist at Dr Oates’s practice, Academy Facial Plastics, since 2000. Her role at the practice encompasses:

  • Intense Pulsed Light treatments
  • Microdermabrasion treatments
  • Superficial Chemical Peel (TCA, AHA and Jessner’s peels)
  • Surgical consultant and educator
  • Pre and post-operative care
  • Cosmeceutical advisor
  • IPL/Laser Safety Officer

In 2002, April and Dr Oates researched the availability of postgraduate courses for nurses and beauty therapists in the field of cosmetic medicine and found there was no generic, nationally accredited courses delivered. This spurred them to collaborate with Curtin University in order to develop the Advanced Diploma of Cosmetic Dermal Science. This ensured the course curriculum would encompass underpinning knowledge units such as psychology, communication and human biology, whilst delivering industry specific units and hands-on training.

Whilst completing a degree in Biomedical Science on a part-time basis, and working within the practice, April had the course government accredited at advanced diploma level in the Australian Qualification Framework. The course has now been successfully running since 2004.

Armed with many years of clinical experience and theoretical knowledge obtained from course/conference attendance and university studies, April specialises in teaching unit 1.1 Dermal Science Theory and unit 2.2 Practical Workshops. With a fresh, modern approach to teaching, April ensures students gain both theoretical and practical skills so students are work-ready upon graduation.
